Terms of use
Buying the app
The app costs US$3.99, or the price Apple sets for your country. You pay once, and everything in the app is included, with no subscription or in-app purchases. You can download it again on any iPhone or iPad signed in to the same Apple Account. Apple takes the payment and handles any refund.
Who these terms are with
The app is published by Kennedy Advisory, a sole proprietorship registered in Singapore (UEN 53527056M). These terms add to Apple's standard licence agreement, which covers your licence to use the app.
What the information is
- Clan links. A surname is linked to a clan when a source connects them: it's the clan's own name, or the clan lists it as a sept (a family name associated with the clan). A link isn't a claim that you, or anyone with the name, belongs to that clan.
- Facts and histories. These come from the sources named on each clan page, and may contain mistakes or be out of date. Chiefs change, so check the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs for the current one.
- Crest badges. The crest and motto belong to the clan's chief. The app shows the badge a clan member may wear: the chief's crest inside a strap and buckle bearing the motto. It's drawn in silver, following Lyon Court guidance that crest badges appear only in white or silver.
- Tartans. Each is drawn from its thread count in the Scottish Register of Tartans. The app uses a copy of the Register from January 2017, so newer tartans are missing. Colours vary between screens. Some tartans have a restriction recorded on the Register, so check the tartan's Register entry, linked in the app, before you have cloth woven or make anything to sell.
- Map pins. These mark the seats a source records. They don't show the extent of a clan's lands.
Licences for the content
- The clan histories are written for Caledonian Roots from Wikipedia articles and are shared under CC BY-SA 4.0.
- The crest badge drawings come from Wikimedia Commons and are adapted to silver. Each keeps its own licence (CC BY-SA 3.0, CC BY-SA 4.0 or public domain), and the app credits each artist.
- Seat coordinates and well-known people come from Wikidata, which is CC0.
- Facts for a few clans come from ScotClans, and those pages say so.
- The two clan maps are in the public domain and come from Wikimedia Commons.
- The music, gallery pictures and motto posters are Caledonian Roots’ own work.
Independence
The app isn't affiliated with or endorsed by the Scottish Register of Tartans, the Court of the Lord Lyon, the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs or any clan society.
Shop links
Clan pages and the gallery link to the Caledonian Roots shop on a third-party marketplace. Which links you see depends on your App Store country. Anything you buy there is covered by that marketplace's terms, not these.
No guarantee
We work to keep the app accurate and working, but can't promise it will always be either. To the extent the law allows, Kennedy Advisory isn't liable for decisions made using it.
